Metal work

Metal work

Javier is a local metal worker, originally from Mexico City. He teaches a two day workshop in which students learn how to make a knife, including the blade made from scrap metal, a handle, and a sheath. Students leave the class with the knife they created, as well as with practical knowledge about metal work.

Students go to Javier's home for the class, where he has built a forge, several work stations, and a bicycle powered metal grinder. Javier is a passionate instructor who really cares about teaching quality and precision during the knife-making process. He takes great pride in all of his own metal work, and after the workshop students do have an opportunity to purchase one of his hand-crafted knives.

Because of the nature of the equipment and the work, students are asked to follow a small set of rules to protect both themselves and the tools they are using.

Javier lives with his wife Andreja, and their two children Gaia and Lenart. In addition to metal work, Javier is a professional chef. Andreja is also a proficient cook and makes tofu every week to sell in the town market. They both make bread and pastries to sell as well. They provide students with healthy, great tasting vegetarian food for lunch during a break in the class.

The class costs $500 pesos MXN for a two day workshop and includes lunch, snacks and tea throughout the day. Class payment is made directly to the instructor. Students must sign a liability waiver.
